Robert Scales, Ph.D. joined forces with Dorian L. Dugmore, Ph.D. (Consultant, English Football League Managers Association) to present a symposium on the health of the retired athlete at the annual meeting of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM) in Chicago, Illinois (November 8th, 2019). Conference attendees heard how life as a professional soccer coach and manager may increase cardiac risk in former players. A review of the literature also showed that a playing career in the National Football League often leaves retired players with orthopedic, neurological and cardiovascular health complications. It appears that in these examples, the sport may negatively influence the aging process. Recommendations were given to help healthcare professionals prepare active players for life beyond the sport and into retirement. For more information about ACRM go to www.acrm.org
